H1: Orionx Shutdown: $7M Customer Asset Gap, Frozen Withdrawals and Chile Regulatory Status
Chilean crypto exchange Orionx has begun a permanent shutdown after a forensic review identified a multimillion-dollar custody discrepancy.
The company says more than $7 million in customer assets had moved to wallets outside its control.
Withdrawals are temporarily suspended while Orionx attempts to reconcile remaining assets and design a restitution process.
What the custody gap means
An exchange can show a customer a balance in an internal ledger even when the corresponding on-chain assets are no longer under the exchange’s control.
That is the central risk in the Orionx case.
The gap therefore represents a failure of custody reconciliation, not merely a temporary liquidity delay.
Assets involved
Public reporting says the discrepancy involves major cryptoassets including Bitcoin, Ether, XRP and Polygon/POL.
Some reporting places the reconciled shortfall around $6 million for specific reviewed assets while Orionx’s broader company statement refers to more than $7 million.
CEXVia uses the broader “more than $7 million” company-level figure while treating asset-by-asset sub-totals as developing.
Withdrawals suspended
Orionx has paused withdrawals during the shutdown.
The company says the goal is to avoid unequal treatment while it determines what assets remain available and recoverable.
There is no confirmed full-repayment timetable.
Criminal complaint
Orionx has filed criminal complaints against former executives it alleges were connected to historical transfers from company custody.
Those allegations have not been proven in court.
CEXVia therefore separates:
- Confirmed: Orionx filed complaints.
- Alleged: former executives misappropriated customer assets.
CMF regulatory status
Chile’s Financial Market Commission says:
- Orionx is not registered or authorized by the CMF under the Fintech Law;
- Orionx applied for registration and authorization;
- that application was rejected on June 19, 2026;
- the CMF is not supervising Orionx’s closure;
- the CMF cannot order Orionx to return customer funds.
