AscendEX Shutdown 2026: Claims Portal, Withdrawals and Insolvency Risk

AscendEX has suspended operations and customer withdrawals and is preparing a claims portal while considering rescue options and a formal insolvency process. What users need to know.

AscendEX is no longer operating as a normal crypto exchange.

The platform says normal operations and customer withdrawals have been suspended since July 1, 2026. It is now preparing a customer claims portal, exploring rescue and recapitalization options, and at the same time taking steps toward a possible formal insolvency process.

That combination puts AscendEX in a materially different category from an exchange that is simply exiting a market or voluntarily closing a product line.

For customers, the central questions are no longer about trading fees or available markets. They are about claim recognition, recovery value, legal priority and whether any restructuring can avoid formal insolvency.

What happened to AscendEX?

AscendEX initially described its closure in the context of regulatory, financial and operational pressures. It also noted that it did not hold authorization under the EU's MiCA framework when the regime became fully applicable.

Subsequent disclosures provided a more serious financial explanation.

In an August 5 statement, AscendEX said a December 2021 security incident had created a substantial legacy financial loss. The company says it absorbed that loss rather than passing it directly to users and continued to honor withdrawals after the hack, but its financial position was weakened.

AscendEX later entered into acquisition and recapitalization arrangements with The Royal Investment Bank of Kelantan Inc., or RIBK. According to AscendEX, the promised funding was not delivered and the transaction failed.

The exchange says that failure removed the recapitalization pathway it had been relying on and directly contributed to the suspension of operations.

These are AscendEX's own descriptions of events. They have not yet resulted in a published independent audit of the platform's assets and liabilities.

Withdrawals are suspended

This is one of the clearest differences between AscendEX and several other exchanges currently winding down.

AscendEX has explicitly said that normal customer withdrawals are suspended.

Earlier in July, the platform had described withdrawals as subject to manual review and said requests could be delayed or not processed depending on legal, operational, compliance and balance-reconciliation requirements.

By August 5, the exchange was more direct: normal platform operations and customer withdrawals were suspended, and the company could not provide assurances about timing or amounts.

That means users should not interpret access to an account balance as evidence that the corresponding crypto can currently be withdrawn.

The Claims Portal is expected in September

On August 22, AscendEX said it was repurposing ascendex.com into a secure customer-information and claims portal.

The company is targeting September 5, 2026 for the initial launch, although it has warned that the date may change if technical, security or legal work takes longer.

The portal is intended to allow eligible users to:

  • review recorded account balances;
  • submit or register claims;
  • upload supporting documentation where required; and
  • receive information about the claims process.

This is an important step, but it does not determine what customers will ultimately recover.

AscendEX explicitly states that displaying a balance or accepting a claim does not mean the claim has been legally admitted, does not determine its priority and does not guarantee the timing or amount of repayment.

That wording is typical of a process moving from normal account servicing toward restructuring or insolvency claims administration.

Has AscendEX entered formal insolvency?

Not yet, based on the latest public statement.

AscendEX says it is pursuing two paths in parallel.

The first is a rescue, recapitalization or restructuring transaction that could preserve value and improve outcomes for users and other stakeholders.

The second is preparation for a formal insolvency process.

The company has not said that a formal insolvency proceeding has already begun, nor has it announced a final administrator, court proceeding or customer recovery schedule.

That distinction is important for accuracy. AscendEX is preparing for possible formal insolvency, but the public record does not yet establish that the company has entered one.

What recovery percentage can customers expect?

There is currently no credible percentage.

AscendEX has not published enough information to calculate a recovery rate. In particular, there is no complete public statement of:

  • customer liabilities;
  • liquid crypto reserves;
  • restricted or encumbered assets;
  • corporate liabilities;
  • legal claims;
  • recoverable assets linked to the 2021 hack;
  • potential proceeds from litigation against RIBK;
  • restructuring financing.

Without those numbers, any precise recovery estimate would be speculation.

The claims portal may improve account-level visibility, but it still will not by itself reveal the overall recovery ratio.

Why the 2021 hack still matters in 2026

The December 2021 incident is not just historical background.

AscendEX now links its legacy financial position to the losses it absorbed following that security breach. The company says the later RIBK recapitalization was intended to resolve that financial position.

This makes the 2021 hack relevant to the 2026 shutdown because it shows how a security event can remain economically significant long after immediate user withdrawals have resumed.

A platform can survive a hack operationally while carrying the financial consequences on its balance sheet for years.

For exchange-risk analysis, that is an important distinction between short-term incident recovery and long-term solvency resilience.

What customers should document

Because AscendEX is moving toward a claims process, users should preserve records relevant to their account position.

Useful records may include:

  • account balances;
  • transaction history;
  • deposit and withdrawal records;
  • screenshots of account statements;
  • support tickets;
  • KYC status;
  • emails from AscendEX;
  • wallet transaction hashes.

Users should rely on AscendEX's official channels and be cautious of anyone offering to accelerate a claim, unlock withdrawals or recover funds in exchange for a fee, deposit, password or private key.

The company has specifically warned about impersonation and claims-related scams.

CEXVia assessment

Risk level: Critical

AscendEX presents a confirmed withdrawal and solvency-related risk.

The platform has suspended customer withdrawals, acknowledged a legacy financial problem, described the failure of a recapitalization transaction and started building a formal claims process while preparing for possible insolvency.

The largest unknown is the recovery value available to customers.

The September 5 claims portal is the next operational milestone. The next substantive milestone will be any disclosure of a restructuring transaction, formal insolvency filing, asset-liability statement or recovery framework.
